When you travel the Val d'Orcia, you can not miss the opportunity to visit Monticchiello, where we can appreciate this popular landscape, in which the small road flanked by cypresses meanders up the hill with such harmony that seems to have been the work of a great painter brush.

On my first trip through the Val d'Orcia, more than 2 years ago, I came to this place on foot after a route of more than 20 kms. On that occasion, the clouds covered the sky and there was no light at all. This time, travelling by car, I could wait calmly for a small storm to finish, to capture the golden sunlight before the shadows began to cover the landscape again.

Si se viaja por el Val d´Orcia, no se puede dejar pasar la oportunidad de visitar Monticchiello, desde donde podremos contemplar este famoso paisaje, en el que la pequeña carretera escoltada por cipreses serpentea por la colina con tal armonía que parece haber sido obra del pincel de un gran pintor.

En mi primer viaje por el Val d´Orcia, hace más de 2 años, llegué a este lugar a pie después de una ruta de más de 20 kms. En aquella ocasión las nubes cubrían el cielo y no había luz en absoluto. Esta vez, viajando en coche, pude esperar tranquilamente a que pasara una pequeña tormenta, para captar la luz dorada del sol antes de que la sombras comenzaran a cubrir de nuevo el paisaje.

After the show that the fog gave me, it seemed that the sunrise had little to offer me. The sun did not dare to rise and the clouds presaged more rain than clarity. The minutes passed and I started to think about leaving without the photo that I was looking for. Maybe next time...

In a few seconds everything changed and the sun filtered through the clouds. A divine light appeared projected on the landscape. I took several bracketed shots (7 exposures) and this blending of 4 of them is the result of an unforgettable moment. Next time that common sense tells you to desist, perhaps it is better you do the opposite (at least if you want to take haunting pictures).

Después del espectáculo que me dio la niebla, parecía que el amanecer tenía ya poco que ofrecer. El sol no se atrevía a salir y las nubes presagiaban más lluvia que claridad. Los minutos pasaban y ya empezaba a plantearme abandonar sin la foto que venía buscando. Otra vez sería...

En unos segundos todo cambió y el sol se filtró entre las nubes. Una luz que parecía divina se proyectó en el paisaje. Tiré ráfagas de 7 exposiciones y esta mezcla de 4 de ellas es el resultado de un momento inolvidable. La próxima vez que el sentido común os diga que desistáis, quizás es mejor que le llevéis la contraria (al menos si queréis hacer fotografías inolvidables).

If you wake up at 6 in the morning (and it´s Sunday!) to take a picture, the first thing you have to do is look out the window to see how the weather is. When it's all cloudy and you can not see a meter away because of the fog, it´s better you go back to sleep. Well, this time I decided to risk and the show that the fog gave me was unforgettable.

When I got the place to take the picture the fog had cleared enough to appreciate the scenery, but in a few minutes began to cover everything again. Before I couldn´t see anything, I managed to freeze this moment. It took several minutes before the landscape started to appear again, and then the sun gave me another show, but that is another story / photo.

Si te levantas a las 6 de la mañana (¡encima un domingo!) para hacer una foto, lo primero que tienes que hacer es mirar por la ventana para ver qué tal se presenta el tiempo. Cuando está todo nublado y encima no ves a 1 metro de distancia por culpa de la niebla, mejor vuélvete a dormir. Vale pues esta vez decidí jugármela y el espectáculo que me regaló la niebla fue inolvidable.

Cuando llegué al lugar para realizar la fotografía la niebla se había despejado lo suficiente para apreciar el paisaje, pero en pocos minutos empezó a cubrirse todo otra vez. Antes de que no se viera nada, conseguí congelar este instante. Tuvieron que pasar varios minutos hasta que empezó a descubrirse el paisaje de nuevo y entonces el sol me regaló otro espectáculo, pero esa es otra historia/fotografía.

It does not matter what road you get to San Gimignano, the first thing you are going to notice will be its stunning medieval towers.

Not always stormy days ending in spectacular sunsets. This time I had to hold my umbrella for more than one hour to take the pictures. At times like this, and even more when the city lights are turned on rather late, do a manual "blending" (mix) in post-processing may result in a pretty picture, which collects not only a single instant, but all the moments that we contemplated.

Se llegue por la carretera que se llegue a San Gimignano, lo primero que llamará la atención desde la lejanía son sus imponentes torres de origen medieval.

No siempre los días de tormenta acaban en espectaculares atardeceres. Esta vez me tocó sostener el paraguas durante más de una hora para poder realizar las fotografías. En momentos así, y más aún cuando encienden las luces de la ciudad bastante tarde, realizar un "blending" (mezcla) manual en post-procesado puede dar como resultado una bonita imagen, que recoja no solo un único instante, sino todos los momentos que se fueron presentando frente a nosotros.
